Mindset: Growth vs Fixed

Mindset – Staying Positive in a Changing Real Estate Market

There are many attributes that separate mediocre performers from amazing performers. They all start in the gap between your ears.  #Mindset

I have the pleasure and privilege of working with amazing men and women every week – most of whom are already at the top of their game + others who are nipping at their heels. Without fail, all of them go through times of uncertainty.

For example, they wonder whether they’ve got what it takes to succeed (even when they’re #1 in their office or region). Sometimes they let their mental defences down and allow all the negative chatter in the office and media to shake their equilibrium.

Screwing our heads back on straight again after a negative experience is simple – but certainly not always easy.

Because of this reason I have an open door policy for all of my coaching clients. If they get thrown off the proverbial horse and are struggling to get back on again, they know to call me! ASAP

The longer you leave stinking thinking going on in your head, the more poisonous and toxic it will become.

Mindset: the new psychology of success

On Boxing Day 2007 Carol Dweck released her book “Mindset: the new psychology of success“.

In this book she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities.

People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed.

The book reveals how anyone can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.

The power of our most basic beliefs

Mindset takes readers on a journey into how their thinking – both conscious and unconscious – affect them. It demonstrates that even something as simple as the words people use can have a powerful impact on their ability to improve.

As an NLP practitioner I’m right into the power of words. When I’m coaching clients I’m often helping them tweak what they say (and think) to get better results & outcomes.

Dweck’s work shows the power of everyone’s most basic beliefs. Whether we’re aware of what’s going on in our heads or not. It’s especially the subconscious thought patterns that strongly and powerfully affect what we want and whether we succeed in getting it.

Much of what we think we understand of our personality comes from our “mindset.” This both propels us and prevents us from fulfilling our potential.

For example, we might believe the lies other people have told us (eg, parents, teachers, siblings). Such lies might be:

“I’m stupid”

“I’ve got my mum’s fat genes”

“I’m not techy”

“I’m not very good at doing appraisals”

In Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, Dweck asks:

What are the consequences of thinking that your intelligence or personality is something you can develop, as opposed to something that is a fixed, deep-seated trait?

Your view of yourself

If you believe yourself to be a failure or success that’s exactly what you’ll end up being.

If you believe your qualities are unchangeable (ie, you have a fixed mindset) you’ll (subconsciously) create situations in your life that justify and endorse this belief.

Two Mindsets

In Mindset, Dweck states:

If you have only a certain amount of intelligence, a certain personality, and a certain moral character— well, then you’d better prove that you have a healthy dose of them. It simply wouldn’t do to look or feel deficient in these most basic characteristics.

I’ve seen so many people with this one consuming goal of proving themselves— in the classroom, in their careers, and in their relationships. Every situation calls for a confirmation of their intelligence, personality, or character. Every situation is evaluated: Will I succeed or fail? Will I look smart or dumb? Will I be accepted or rejected? Will I feel like a winner or a loser?

Two powerful phrases that can turn a fixed mindset into a growth mindset

The Power of “YET”

You can overcome a fixed mindset by adding “yet” to statements that could otherwise be seen as shortcomings or failures – for example:

  • I don’t have any listings……………. yet!
  • I don’t have any registered buyers for this auction……………… yet!
  • I don’t know how to do {ABC}…………. yet!

The power of believing you can improve

The Power of “EVEN THOUGH”

“Even though” has been part of my daily affirmation sequence for a few years and I love it!

I’m a great believer in the power of affirmations.

Even if you don’t believe in affirmations, my question to you is what type of thoughts would you rather have going around in your mind – positive or negative ones?

I know I’d rather have positive ones, but sometimes, the negative stuff still manages to creep in and I still manage to doubt myself.

When that happens I reframe the sentence with “even though {something that’s not working or something I want but haven’t yet got} because {acceptance of something positive or self-acceptance}”

For example:

“Even though I didn’t go for my walk yesterday it doesn’t mean I’ve totally blown my exercise programme because I can still do it today”

Using “even though” takes the sting out of something that’s not the way you want it right now. It also helps soften the beat-up we’re all really good at giving ourselves.
